Mattie
C. Hastings
was born in Denton County, Texas, on the 13th
day of June 1879.
She
was the youngest
of 7 children born to Dempsey Roann Kiser
(27
July 1850 Bedford, TN - 5 June 1929)
and George
D. Hastings (10
Dec 1846 TN - 27 Jun 1936 TN)
,
who
were
married in Bedford Co, TN on 22 Dec 1869.
On
April 2, 1897, Mattie married Daniel M. Salmon at the courthouse
in Ada, a town in the Chickasaw Nation (Oklahoma).
When
Pontotoc County was created in 1907, Ada became the county seat.
The county name honored Chief Pontotoc; Pontotoc means "Cattails
growing on the prairie."
Daniel
was born in Montague County, Texas, on September 24, 1875.

Grannie
lost her beloved Daniel when he passed away on May 6, 1934.
Daughter Bessie lived at home with her parents. She never married
and desired to give her devotion to Grannie.
Mattie
lived to be 93 years old and peacefully passed away in her own
home in Fresno, California, on the 15th day of October, 1972.
Mattie
Hastings is my father's grandmother and my "Grannie."
Grannie
was truly a remarkable lady who grew up in the untamed territories
of Texas and Oklahoma back in the days when Native Americans
and Anglo settlers committed gruesome and brutal attacks upon
each others' peoples.
Mattie
raised her 11 children, living in poverty, continually being
forced to leave her home, start over, and for many of those
years, she endured the horrors of the Dust Bowl.
I
knew my great grandmother in the 1950's and 60's when, she was
in her eighties and enjoyed hosting huge family dinners at her
house in Fresno, California.
I
remember how she was so fond of her rabbit, Smokey. She would
tell me what Smokey was thinking and what secret things he would
be up to next as soon as she put him out the back door into
the yard.,
Grannie
never lost her sense of humor, nor that mischevious twinkle
in her eyes.

She was
the daughter of John KIZER and Hannah
Roann HARBOUR, who married circa 1841 in TN, possibly
Bedford Co.
John KIZER
was the son of Jacob and Dempsey HOOKER, who
was the son of Valentine KIZER and Catherine
STIEHL.
Hannnah
Roann HARBOUR was the daughter of Samuel B. HARBOUR
and Nancy Carolin GANT.
George D.
HASTINGS was the son of Col. John HASTINGS and Luarka
RAY of Bedford Co, TN.

HASTINGS is the son of Joseph HASTINGS, Jr and Nancy
PITTMAN, who is the son of Joseph HASTINGS,
Sr and Susannah HOLLOWAY of Orange Co, NC, who is the
son of Henry HASTINGS and Elizabeth McDANIEL
