• ID: I00390
• Name: William Bell 1
• Sex: M
• Birth: ABT 1806 in Wilson CO. Tennessee 1
• Death: BET 1845 AND 1850 in Missouri
• Census:
1830 Rutherford CO. Tennessee; pg 286: 00001/00001
1840 Cannon CO. Tennessee; 210001-110001
• Note: Today, there is no proof that William Bell born circa 1806 in Wilson County Tennessee married Rachel Ellsberry. Nevertheless, there is certainly enough circumstantial data to make such a supposition. I have outlined my thoughts below to establish this relationship.

William was married before the 1830 Rutherford County census was taken. No children were included in his household. In 1840 his household included five children. One boy and one girl were born between 1830 and 1835. Two boys and one girl were born between 1835 and 1840. This matches the known children of William Bell and Rachel Ellsberry of Phelps County Missouri, except the daughter born between 1835 and 1840 has not been identified.

When James Bell died in 1828 William inherited a parcel next to his family's plantation that was purchased by his father from Isaac Ellsberry. Ellsberry seems to have been a resident of Rutherford County through the 1820's before he and his family moved to Carroll County Tennessee.

As best as I can determine Isaac arrived in Tennessee from North Carolina by way of Ohio. He appears to have lived in Ohio in the early 1810's. This agrees with the 1880 census information for Rachel Lucy Bell. She gave her place of birth as Ohio circa 1811.

The Bell family had begun its western migration when Samuel Bell moved to Crawford County Missouri. He was enumerated there in the 1840 census. His sister, Nancy Emeline Jamison, was there in 1842 when she and her husband signed the deed for the Cannon County property between the heirs of James Bell and Maxwell Chambers. Abraham Lewis Bell bought a parcel of property adjoining one that had been purchased by a William Bell of Crawford County. By 1850 most of the Bells were in Newton County. Not William and his family.

Lastly, the naming convention used by William and Rachel fits the Bells of Cannon County. The oldest son was named James William Bell. Seems that this son was named not only for his father but after his grandfather, James Bell. Isaac Ellsberry Bell seems to be named in honor of Rachel's father. And Elisha Enoch Bell connects the names of an uncle Enoch Ellsberry and uncle Elisha Bell.

• PROP: 16 JUN 1820 Assigned 30A from state of Tennessee to Evan Smith; 21326
• Note: James Bell was the first clerk of the Brawley Fork Baptist Church. His affiliation with this church is born out in a deed dated 15 July 1807 between Joshua Barton of the one part and James Bell and William Hollis and other trustees of the other part. It was a gift of land to be used for the future site of the Brawley Fork Church located south-east of Readyville.

James died testate in 1828. When his plantation was eventually sold to Maxwell Chambers of Rowan County North Carolina, all of the living heirs had to approve its sale. This gave a unique snapshot in time, 1842, as to where his children had all relocated following his death. One was in Illinois, some still in Tennessee, and others in Missouri.

The land owned by James Bell using todays milestones was on both sides of Hollis Creek. Its northerly border would have intersected Hollis Road at the point the road now crosses over from the west to the east bank. Its easterly line would have run below and back of Campbell's residence. Its once southerly reaches would have extended across the new Murfreesboro to Woodbury Highway. On the west it would have included the southern half of River Road and both sides of the Stones River. Neighbors then were Thomas Rucker and James Cherry to the north; Gideon Rucker to the west; and Burrell Walker to the south west.

Prior to moving to Tennessee, James Bell was an early resident of both Lincoln and Madison County Kentucky. His sister, Hannah, married Elijah Harbour in Lincoln County in 1787. On the 1795 tax census for Madison County he and Hannah were listed as owners of 1875 acres in Mason County, assignee of which was Elijah Harbour. This property originated from a Treasury Warrant, #8433. The land survey, #490, was made on March 26, 1789 and recorded in Book 1, page 313. When James' mother, Sarah, sold her 60 acres in 1796 to Barnabas Johnson, she and Elijah Harbour had been living on adjoining parcels located on Silver Creek. Both parcels were purchased from George Smith of Powhatan County Virginia.
