Hello! Robert Jemison II m Margaret Kirkham. He was b in Bucks
Co PA where Robert Jemison I settled from Ireland and married
Sarah McKee. I have my Jemison line back to him. No one in 100
years has found his parents. Some have put out wrong data on
his parents but I had proven what they had was wrong and they
saw their mistake. It was spelled Jameson many times tho. I
have a book The Jameson's To America ($75) and the author spelled
every name in it as Jameson which was for saving time for author
to write it!I have some old family letters also that gives Robert
! as coming form Ireland. He had a son William(in DAR books
I have 4 volumes of) and his will..I do have some on the Kirkham
in my Gen system and will compare and get back to you. I was
fortunate to have a copy of my aunt;s data that she kept all
her life on family. So far have found no mistakes in her memoirs.
I have a copy of Henry Kirkham's will.He came from ireland and
settled in Rockbridge which was changed to Augusta Co and there
is where he made his will Thanks for the contact and hope to
keep in touch with you.My aunt was b 1883 and died 1984, never
married. I want to go into Gensystem and get dates for you.I
use PAF5.

3. ELIZABETH "BETTIE" BOWERS OR ROSS3 JEMISON (ROBERT2,
ROBERT1) was born June 6, 1786 in Lincoln Co. ,GA, and died
1820 in Jackson Co.,GA. She married ROBERT J. KIRKHAM 1805 in
Cherokee Tribe, Indian Terr.GA, son of MICHAEL KIRKHAM and MARY
CAMPBELL. He was born 1785 in KY, and died 1860 in Bibb, GA.
Notes for ROBERT J. KIRKHAM:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/kirkham/messages/93.html
It is uncertain that Robert, born in Kentucky in 1785, is the
son of Michael and Nancy Campbell Kirkham, but there were only
three Kirkhams in Kentucky in 1785--brothers Robert, Samuel
and Michael. They had come to Kentucky from Virginia in 1799
and settled near what is now Danville, Kentucky. Our Robert,
born 1785, is apparently the son of one of these brothers. He
left Kentucky for Georgia about 1804, went to Georgia where
other family members lived at the time, and ended up marrying
his first cousin, Elizabeth Jemison, in 1805. The fact that
he named his first born son Michael Campbell Kirkham after his
father and mother is additional circumstantial evidence as to
who his parents were.
The list of our Robert's children is largely based on circumstantial
evidence, as reported in the "Kirkham Family Newsletter,"
No. 9, October 1986, p. 74. The first four sons were identified
from census records, dates of birth, and dates and place of
marriages as sons of Robert. The fifth "son" William
was on the 1840 census of Cass Co and is most probably also
a son. Parthena Kirkham is buried in the Cassville Cemetery
where Robert lived in his later years, but who she is is unknown.
The last three children (and the step-daughter Georgia) are
from Robert's second marriage.

Subject: Mississippi Kirkhams
Dear Dolores and Mary,
It's been a long time since we have been in contact so I hope
this finds
you both doing well. I just wanted to share with you a book
I found
about a woman's experience in the area about 25 miles from
where our
Kirkham ancestors lived in Mississippi. The book is "The
Diary of
Caroline Seabury- 1854 to 1863" by Suzanne L. Bunkers.
It's not a very
long book but the diary of Ms. Seabury gives a fascinating
picture of
life in Mississippi during the War when our family was there.
She even
worked at a plantation that is still there today called Waverly,
which
is just northeast of Columbus on Columbus Lake, and about 25
miles
southeast of where our Kirkham's lived in Blackwell Springs,
Oktibbeha
County east of Starkville. And, even more interesting, on page
77,
there was a letter of introduction requesting safe passage
back North
for Ms. Seabury addressed to a "Judge Venable" (our
Roxanna's ancestor
maybe?)!
Anyway, this all just piqued my interest even more and I hope
to visit
there some day. Well, take care cousins and please keep in
touch!

2nd Cavalry Regiment [also called the 4th and 42nd Regiment]
was organized during the spring of 1863. It was formerly the
47th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, which never completed its
organization. Its members were from the counties of Adams, Choctaw,
Newton, Lee, Lauderdale, Pontotoc, Kemper, and Hinds. The unit
was assigned to W. Adams', Mabry's, and F. C. Armstrong's Brigade.
After skirmishing in Mississippi it saw action in various conflicts
in North Georgia and Alabama. Some of the men were captured
in the fight at Selma, and only a remnant surrendered with the
Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Lousiana. The field
officers were Colonels Edward Dillon and J. L. McCarty, Lieutenant
Colonel James Gordon, and Majors J. L. Harris and John J. Perry.
Robert & Mary migrated to Louisisnia by the time of the
1870 census and settled in the Price Peach Orchard community
of Bienville Parish.

Notes for MARTHA ANN " MATT" KIRKHAM:
Some information on Mat follows:
The search for Martha Ann Kirkham was hampered by family lore
which said that
Lafayette heard her singing in a teepee, no less!--she was
supposed to have been
Cherokee or Choctaw depending on who was telling the story
(Cherokees did not
live in teepees)--while he was marching with the Confederate
Army, courted her,
and promised to return for her. The family story said that
her name was either
Kirkham or Kirkland. The story also said that her name was
Ann, possibly Julia
Ann. However, this researcher previously had been in touch
with another family
researcher who said that her name was Martha Ann.
The first inkling of where she was from was found in the 1870
census for
LaGrange Township, Lafayette Co, Arkansas, where she was listed
with Lafayette
Myatt and two children as M. A. Myatt, and which showed that
she had been born in
Georgia. The 1850 census for Gordon Co, Georgia, showed a Martha
A. of the right
age with the family of Robert Kirkham, but linking her to this
family was not
possible at that time. (Mat's son Braxton reported in the 1910
Robertson Co, TX
census that his mother had been born in Louisiana--this is
incorrect.)
Then came the clincher: a series of letters and references
to this family in the
"Kirkham Family Newsletter." Finally, Martha Ann
was found!
Following is a letter from Mat to her brother Thomas, who served
in the Union
Army; others of her family were in the Confederate States Army.
A photocopy of
the original handwritten letter was received from Theresa Barnard,
a descendant
of Thomas.

as reprinted in the

since it was
preserved--and typed above):

A letter reprinted in the "Kirkham Family Newsletter"
from Matt's sister, "Doe,"
to their brother, Thomas L., mentions Matt:
"Double Springs, Ocktibbla Co., Miss.

Dear Brother and sister
This is with the greatest pleasure that I take my pen in hand

all is well and hope when these few lines come to hand they

you all bad. She
is going to wait (?) on a cupple day after tomorrow. Excuse
mybad writing and
spelling for it is the best I can do.
Doe [their sister Delurah] Woodward"
The question still remains with regard to the supposed Indian
heritage of
Martha. Indeed, her family lived in that part of Georgia which
was originally
Cherokee territory, and she with her parents and siblings moved
to Mississippi to
an area in which Choctaws lived. More research needs to be
done to determine
whether the story of Indian heritage has some basis. One family
story says that
she was 1/2 Indian and that her mother had married a man named
Kirkham, but the
above mentioned family did not appear to be a blended family.
Kathryn Kirkham, a descendant of Thomas L. Kirkham, who lived
at 8944 Ramstad
Avenue, Fair Oaks, CA 95628, is supposed to have provided to
the "Kirkham Family
Newsletter" the letters, or copies thereof, written by
Kirkham family members.

DESCENDANTS OF "MAT" (KIRKHAM) MYATT
Note: Much of the data in this document has not been verified
by me, Dolores
Kinsey. Therefore it should be used only as a starting point
for those who wish
to document their heritage. Please excuse typos and grammatical
errors; the

First Generation
1. *Martha Ann "Mat" KIRKHAM, daughter of *Robert
Jemison KIRKHAM (I) and
*Roxanna VENABLE, was born probably Gordon Co, GA May 26, 1842.
Individual
flags: Ancestor. Matt died January 1876 Texarkana, TX or AR
(?), at 33 years of
age.
She married twice. She married Robert B. HOGAN August 17, 1862
in Choctaw Co,
MS. Robert was born 1825 AL. He married Jane (HOGAN) ca 1850.
The 1850
Okitebbha Co, Mississippi census shows his age as 25, born
in Alabama, and
living with his wife Jane, age 18, who was born in North Carolina.
So,
apparently he was married before his marriage to Martha Ann
Kirkham, and was a
number of years older than she was.
Robert died June 23, 1863 in the Battle for Vicksburg, MS,
at 37 years of age.
She married *Marquis d'Lafayette MYATT November 23, 1864 perhaps
MS.
The marriage date of Lafayette and Martha Ann was recorded
in her brother Thomas
L. Kirkham's Bible, probably some time after the fact. Thomas,
a Union soldier,
did not permanently return to Mississippi, but at some point
he got with another
brother and they recorded family births, marriages and deaths
in his Bible
(reported in Kirkham Family Newsletter). Information from Paul
D. Tolbird, 306
Laurel Grove Drive, Monroe, LA 71203-1303, phone 318/387-4534,
says that
Lafayette Myatt married on November 13, 1870 in Lafayette,
Arkansas, but this
probably is not correct, considering the birthdate of his first
child and
considering the information reportedly found in Thomas L. Kirkham's
Bible entry.
Lafayette was born April 1846 in Attala Co, MS.
Lafayette's sister Martha, in her application for a Louisiana
Confederate
Pension on November 26, 1909, said that she was 65 years old.
Thus it appears
that the "confused" 1850 Census for Attala Co, MS
was referring to her as the
child born in 1844 and not to her brother "Markeest"
Lafayette, who then would be
the child born in 1846. However, better evidence exists to
support an 1843 birth
date of Lafayette. Lafayette was the son of *Mark MYATT and
*Anna (Annie) E.
(Gore?) THOMESON.
Lafayette died after 1910 in Franklin, Robertson Co, TX.
In the search for Lafayette's parents, the connection between
Lafayette and his
father was made through the 1880 Ouachita Co, Louisiana census
for Alexander
Myatt. This Alexander, by birthdate, is part of the family
of Mark Myatt as
enumerated in the 1850 Attala Co, Mississippi census. In addition,
in the 1880
Ouachita Co census, a Yancey Myatt was listed as Alexander's
nephew. This Yancey
Myatt was the son of Lafayette and his wife, Julia Ann. Thus
the connection was
made between Lafayette and his father, Mark.
A great deal of confusion has existed with regard to Lafayette
Myatt's first
name. At times it has been reported as Marcus, and other times
as Marion. (A
Marion Myatt, of the correct age, appears in some census records,
but this is NOT
our Lafayette.) This writer believes his first name was originally
Marquis.
Marquis, an unusual first name, was the title of a Frenchman
named Lafayette who
sided with the Americans in their Revolution against Britain.
The name appears to
have been misspelled in the one census in which Lafayette appears
with his family
as a young boy in 1850 in Attala County, Mississippi. The first
name is spelled
Murkeest and is followed by "DL," which seems to
uphold a premise that his middle
name was D'Lafayette.
However, it must be noted that in the 1900 census for Nacogdoches
Co, Texas, he
is listed with his son-in-law, David H. Muckleroy, as Marion
L. Myatt. Perhaps
he changed his name in later life because of its unfamiliarity.
It was also from
this census record that his birthdate was obtained.
Research on Myatt's Civil War service revealed the following:
He enrolled with Capt. John Weir's Company, 5th Mississippi
Volunteers
(Confederate), in New Prospect, Mississippi on August 26, 1861
for one year's
service, at which time he was paid for three days' subsistence
and six days'
forage (presumably for his horse) furnished by himself. This
Company subsequently
became, or became a part of, Company D, "New Prospect
Grays," 5th Regiment,
Mississippi Infantry. In the book "Military History of
Mississippi," Company D,
New Prospect Greys, of Winston County, mustered into State
service at Louisville
12 August, 1861, with Captains John Weir, elected Major; William
Griffin, died
November 1862; First Lieutenant John Quarles; Second Lieutenant
William J. Hanna;
Third Lieutenant James R. Moore.
After signing up, Lafayette then travelled 135 miles from his
home in Oktibbeha
County to the place of rendevous at Enterprise, Mississippi,
where he was
formally enlisted by Lieut. J. S. Lanier on October 18, 1861
for 10 mo., 6 days,
to August 26, 1862, as a Private in Capt. John Weir's Company.
He was listed as
18 years old on the muster-in roll dated October 18, 1861,
although census
records may indicate he was born in 1847 and thus be much younger.
The signing
officer was Lieut. J. S. Lanier. (The compiled service record
for Pvt. M. L.
Myatt, 3 Conf. Engineer Troops, is not the same person.)
Companies A through K, with the exception of a Company J, "formed
the Fifth
Regiment, Fourth Brigade, of Mississippi Volunteers, known
as the Army of
Mississippi, and the organization of the regiment was completed
by the election
of field officers 5 September, 1861, at Enterprise" (from
"Military History of
Mississippi").
Notes from the Company Muster Rolls, found in the National
Archives in
Washington, D.C., and information found in the book, "Compendium
of the
Confederate Armies--Mississippi," by Stewart Sifakis,
published in New York by
Facts on File, 1995, and found in the Redlands, California,
Public Library's
Heritage Room, show the movements of his unit(s). Another source
of information
would be "Confederate Military History," v. VII,
p. 232, Confederate Publishing
Company, Atlanta, Georgia, 1899, also found in the Redlands
library. And still
another source was the series of books, "War of the Rebellion--Official
Records
of the Union and Confederate Armies." This series was
found in the public
library of Iuka, Mississippi.
Some notes regarding Lafayette's military service:
Muster Roll: Lafayette was counted as present on January 1,
1862, and was on
extra duty by order No. 17 as a Teamster. He also received
pay, recorded as
Lafait Myett by Jas. R. Kidd.
Vol. 6, p. 819: January 30, 1862, Dept. of Alabama and West
Florida,
January-March 1862, commanded by Braxton Bragg - Army of Pensacola,
Brig. Gen.
Sam Jones. Assume Myatt is there at Pensacola, the unit's first
service at the
front. The Fifth was reported as part of the command of Gen.
Sam. Jones, February
1, 1862. (This reference to General Braxton Brigg is significant
in that
Lafayette later named his firstborn son Braxton, perhaps after
this commanding
general.)
In March 1862 the Regiment was assigned to Chalmers' Brigade,
Withers' Division,
1st Corps, 2nd Grand Division, Army of the Mississippi, Department
No. 2 (with
which the Regiment would remain in various assignments until
November 1862). The
Regiment was somewhere east of Iuka, Mississippi, when the
advance of Grant's
army landed at Crump's landing on March 12, 1862.
The first major battle in which the Regiment was engaged was
the Battle for
Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862, with Col. Albert E. Fant commanding,
in Chalmers'
Brigade of Withers' Division, Bragg's Corps, at that battle.
The 5th was "the
fourth regiment in the brigade column and was left behind in
the first charge of
the brigade through the Federal camps in their front, but it
soon came up, took
position next the Tenth, which was the leading regiment, and
was an active
participant in the hard fighting during the rest of the day."
April to June 1862 they were in the Corinth (Mississippi) Campaign.
This
campaign took place near Lafayette's home, which was Attala
County and Oktibbeha
County, Mississippi. (Perhaps he was able to visit his family
during this
time.) After the siege of Corinth, and the evacuation, the
regiment was
transferred with Bragg's army to Chattanooga. "The Fifth
was not with Chalmers'
Brigade in the Kentucky campaign, being brigaded with the Eighth
in Jackson's
Brigade of Withers' Division, Polk's right wing, Army of the
Mississippi, General
Bragg commanding. The regiment was at Harrodsburg during the
battle of
Perryville, after which they returned by way of Cumberland
Gap and Chattanooga to
Bridgeport, Alabama."
Whether Lafayette was with his Company during all this time
is not known. What
is known is that on the Muster Roll for June 1862 he was shown
as being in the
Macon Hospital. It is not known if this Macon was in Georgia
or in Mississippi.
Macon, Mississippi is fairly near Corinth, Mississippi, and
perhaps there was a
Confederate hospital there. Family stories say that he carried
a shot or ball in
his leg for many years, and that it was surgically removed
on a kitchen table at
some later time in his life.
Vol. 17, p. 633, reports the Regiment on July 1, 1862, in the
Army of
Mississippi, Braxton Bragg, 3rd Army Corps - Gen. W. J. Harder.
Reserve Corps,
Genl. J. R. Chalmers.
In November 1862, the Regiment became part of Jackson's Brigade,
Withers'
Division, Right Wing, Army of the Mississippi, Department No.
2--the same command
in which he served in Chalmers' Brigade. (Something must have
happened to
Chalmers so that he had been replaced by Jackson.) The Brigade
and Division
immediately became a part of the 1st Corps and remained there
until August 1863,
at which time they became part of Cheatham's Division. Perhaps
Cheatham replaced
Withers as officer of that Division. It appears that there
was a series of
changes in command: In addition to the change that took place
in August 1863,
noted above, in February 1864 the Regiment was in Walker's
Division. In July
1864 Jackson was replaced by Gist as leader of the Brigade.
In July 1864 it
became Lowrey's Brigade and Cleburne's Division. All these
were in the 1st
Corps, Army of Tennessee.
The Regiment took part in the Murfreesboro (Tennessee) Campaign
[need to
research this further].

(Stephen D).
July 1865: Believed to be in prison in Alton, Illinois, according
to letter
written by his wife to her brother.
Lafayette was shown in his service records as a Wagoneer/Teamster.
Since family
lore says he was in the "medical corps," it might
be that he was an ambulance
(wagon) driver and that he learned some medical treatment while
in that position.
Lafayette later developed several concoctions which he purveyed
to individuals:
black tar soap (Grandpa's) made from the black petroleum found
on the ground's
surface around Nacogdoches, Texas, liniments, stuff to rub
on boils, and the
like. He made medicine for malaria, and many herbal medicines.
It is said that
he travelled about the country in a wagon in the Comesneil,
Texas area, from
which he presented medicine shows and sold his soaps and potions.
A small notebook, now in the possession of one of his granddaughers,
Winnie
Haltom Wilson, or her heirs, bears testimonials to the effectiveness
of these
products. All the testimonials seem to be written in the same
handwriting,
probably by Lafayette himself as they were spoken by his customers,
some of whom
may have not been able to write their own testimonials. Or,
they may have been
composed and written by Lafayette himself. Some have suggested
that he was not
above a little chicanery, that he once stuck a chicken rooster's
spur on the head
of another rooster and hawked it as a freak in his medicine
show.
1870 Census, LaGrange Township, P.O. Lewisville, Lafayette
Co, AR, p. 153:
Lafayette's movements following the War are not very clear.
In this census he
was in Lafayette Co, Arkansas, with his wife "M.A."
(Martha Ann) and his first
two children, and a female named Louisa, aged 40, b. Alabama.
This is his
sister, Louisa, who apparently never married. This is an extremely
dim record,
but with effort can be read.
In the above census, Lafayette said he was 27 years old, making
his birthdate
1843 since the census was taken on August 13, 1870 and his
birthdate was April.
The 1850 census of Attala County, Mississippi, shows a "female"
7 years old and a
"male" 4 years old. There was a sister named Martha
D L. It appears that the
census taker reversed the gender of these two children, as
well as being confused
by the spelling of Lafayette's full name. The census shows
a spelling of his
name which appears to be "Markeest DL."
Lafayette lived in Falls Co, Texas, at some time, as reported
in "Memorial and
Biographical History of McLennan, Falls, Bell and Coryell Counties,
Texas," p.
921, but no dates were given in the book.
(The 1880 Census of Nacogdoches Co, Texas, ED 47, p. 32, shows
a M. L. Myatt,
age 35, b. MS, with wife Mary and 6 children, whose names do
not correspond with
the known children of Lafayette. Therefore this Census record
is for a different
M. L. Myatt, perhaps the one who served in the 3 Conf. Engineer
Troops mentioned
above.)
1900 Census of Nacogdoches Co, Texas, ED 39, sheet 29, line
14, shows "Marion L.
Myatt" as a widower born April 1843 in MS with both parents
born in NC. He was
in the household of his son-in-law Dave H. Muckleroy, husband
of Lafayette's
daughter Alice Virginia. This is our Lafayette, even though
the name "Marion" is
not consistent with other information. Perhaps he was going
by that name because
his actual first name was so difficult.
1910 Robertson Co, Texas census, ED 39, p. 29, and ED 111,
p. 6, for his son
Braxton says that Braxton's father Lafayette was born in Louisiana;
but in the
1900 census for Nacogdoches Co, where he was living with son-in-law
David
Muckleroy, the informant said that Lafayette was born in Mississippi,
which is
more likely correct.
He was living with his son Braxton in Robertson Co. at the
time of his death,
according to family stories. His gravesite has not been located
at this time.

Subject: Kirkhams from Georgia
Hello,
I am new to the list. Just last night, I learned that my great-great
grandmother was Mary Margaret Kirkham (b.1834 in GA), daughter
of Robert
Jamison Kirkham, Jr. and Roxanna Venable, who married George
Washington Critz
in 1855. A kind researcher several states away had gone to
her court house
and gotten my great-grandmother's death certificate, showing
her mother as a
Kirkham. Within minutes of reading this, I quickly went to
Rootsweb and
looked for Kirkham and found this list. I was thrilled when
the first thing
I saw was the Kirkham gedcom and couldn't believe that within
minutes, I had
gone from 1868 Mississippi to 1700s Virginia!? ...........
For years, I've had virtually nothing on my great-grandmother
other than her
name and that she was born in Mississippi. She was Annie Moore
Critz
(1868-1951) who married Samuel Benjamin Ferguson. I had suspected
she lived
in Starkville MS and this was confirmed on her death certificate;
her mother
Mary Margaret Kirkham is shown as being born in Georgia, and
I'd like to
learn more about the Kirkhams in Georgia and what made them
move on to
Mississippi, and how Mary met her husband, George Critz, and
where he came
from, etc.
Thanks,
Peggy Dyas

HI & wondeful to hear from you !
I am so glad to "find" you ! Your Delurah is the only
one of the 11 children of Robert Kirkham/Roxanna Venable is
the only one I had just about nothing on !
I am so anxious to get the children for Delurahand their descendants.
All I have for her is a birth date of October 14, 1849 in Choctaw
Co., Miss and a marriage date of August 26, 1866 to John L.
Woodward.
Where did the family move to in LA ? My great great grandfather
& his brother wound up in Bienville Parish,LA .( Delurah's
brothers)
Robert Jemison Kirkham married Mary Caroline Allison in Choctaw
Co,MISS and moved to Bienville LA. His brother,William L.S.
Kirkham, also moved from MISS to Bienville.
Mary Caroline Allison Kirkham's family also moved to Bienville,
after his father's second marriage, just about the same time
as Robert & Mary Caroline Kirkham sis. Kinda like a family
migration after the Civil War from MISS to LA.
I would love to have the info from Cecil Burrouhs, and will
gladly share my Kikrham info. I also have the VENABLE &
MOOREMAN info back several generations ( Robert Kirkham's wife's
line)
The only old Kirkham photo I have is of my great-great , Robert
Jemison Kirkham/Mary Caroline Allison, so I wouldlove to see
any others ! Do you have a scanner ? I will gladly pay for a
hard copy if you don't.
I hope we can exchange info. and help each other out.
Again, it is so nice to meet you.

Subject: Kirkham and Woodward families
I am working on the tree for my great grandfather William Mack
Woodward born in Choctaw, Missisippi somewhere around 1875.
His siblings were: John Woodward, Mattie Woodward, Frank Woodward,
Hannah Woodward, Emily Woodward, Elbert Woodward, and Lona Woodward.
William moved his family to Louisiana and was married to Rosalie
Holland. They had 13 children, one of whom was Sadie Bell Woodward
(my grandmother).
William's father was John L. Woodward, also of Mississippi
and I would guess born around 1850.
John L. Woodward was married to Delurah (or Delora) Ann Elizabeth
Kirkham, one of 11 children, born to R. J. Kirkham, son of Robert
Kirkham.
Cecil Burrouhs, who is 87 living in Missouri and is the son
of Lillie Lee Woodward, daughter of Williams Mack Woodward),
tells me he has done extensive genealogy on the Woodward and
Kirkham family and will be sending it to me.
He even has photos, so I hope to get copies. Do any of you
have photos? Can any of you help?
Laura
