WINDFOOT HORSES
Sterling silver earrings $115
A carved stone relief from the city of Persepolis of sixth
century B.C. Persia was the image for this design. Over
a period of 1500 years, the Ancient Persians developed
the finest breed of large horse yet seen. "Windfoot" was
the name the Persians gave this Plateau horse. It was a
cross between the steppe pony and a small horse from
western Persia. After a few hundred years on the best
pastureland in the Middle East, this breed became tall,
strong, and beautiful and became the most desirable
breed in the ancient world.
EQUESTRIENNE SIDESADDLE
14k gold vermeil pendant $85
(also in sterling silver and as a pin)
This design is modeled from the sidesaddle for women riders, as used in Europe in the
sixteenth century. The sidesaddle was invented to make it safer for women riders, as
different from sitting sideways on a man's saddle. In the convention of the era, it was
considered "more becoming" for an equestrienne. The high pommel of a man's saddle
was moved to the left for a rider to grip with her leg. A second "crutch" was added on
some saddles to give a more secure seat.
