STALLION LINES
The classical stallion lines are:
· Maestoso
· Favory
· Conversano
· Pluto
· Neapolitano
· Siglavy
In Lipica, Piber, Lipik, Topolcianky and in Italy, these classical lines are the only lines used for breeding. There are also 2 other stallion lines: Tulipan and Incitato, which are accepted as equal lines to the 6 classical lines by LIF (Lipizzan International Federation). The Tulipan line is mostly found in Croatia, Bosnia, Romania and Hungary. In Hungary they also have the Incitato line.
Pluto
The first founded stallion line was the Pluto line. The lines founding sire was the original grey Pluto stallion, born 1765 at the Frederiksborg stud in Denmark. Actually there were two Pluto lines, one from Lipica and the other from Foragas stud. The Monarchy used them for pulling heavy court coaches as they were strong and handsome horses.
Conversano
The founding stallion of the Conversano line was originaly from Italy, a Neapolitan dark brown Conversano, born 1767 in the stud of Count Kaunitz in Italy.
Neapolitano
Neapolitano, born 1790 in Italy was an original Neapolitan brown stallion and the founder for the Neapolitano line.
Horses from the Conversano and Neapolitano lines were used as swift horses on long trips as they were horses with good staying power.
Favory
The Favory line began in 1779 from the stallion Favory, a blue-brown Kladruby stallion. The best of this line was 372 Favory V-1. In Croatia he had a great influence on the breed of the time.
Maestoso
The founder of the Maestoso line was the grey Kladruby stallion Maestoso Senior, born in 1773. This line died out at Lipica, but it was renewed with the stallion Maestoso X, who was born in 1819 in the Austrian military stud at Mesöhegyes in Hungary.
Siglavy
The founder of the Siglavy line was actually an original Arabian stallion Siglavy and he was born in 1810 in Arabia. All his offspring was superb, so horses of this line are very good breeding horses.
Tulipan
The Tulipan line has it's roots in Croatia. At the beginning of the 1800, there was a stud in Terezovac at the hungarian border. The first stallions and mares came from Lipica around 1860. Strong and fast carriage-horses were bred and already in 1881 they had more than 55 mares and 7 stallions. Then the Croatian lipizzan line Tulipan was created. The early Tulipans were big, muscular and dark in color.
Many famous studs, like Lipica bought horses from Terezovac. At the end of 1800 Terezovac was one of the best studs in Europe. Unfortunately, they closed the stud after the first World War. The Stancic stud got some of the horses and the Lipizzan line Tulipan. When this stud then closed down in 1938, the Tulipan line moved to Lipik and later to Djakovo. The black stallion Tulipan Maradhat (1925 Stancic) was especially used for breeding in Croatia. You can find this stallion in almost every pedigree of a Tulipan horse.
In Szilvasvarad, the Tulipan line goes back to Tulipan Caprice. He was born 1965 in Jugoslavia and was used for breeding in Szilvasvarad in 1970-1971. The great Tulipan XIII represents the Tulipan line in Simbata de Jos, Romania. The brand for Tulipan line stallions is a T and for mares a stylish tulip, an earlier symbol for the Hungarian freedom fighters.
Incitato
The Incitato line comes originally from the Transylvanian stud Bethlen owned by Count Pal Bethlen. The first Incitato ever, the founding sire for the Incitato line, was born in 1802. His sire was the Romanian Siebenburger stallion Curioso and his dam was the Spanish born mare 532 Capelano. The Hungarian stud farm Mezöhegyes bought Incitato in 1815. He was used as a breeding stallion for the time when horses from Lipica were in Mezöhegyes during the war from 1809-1815. In the following years were 23 of Incitatos offspring used as breeding stallions in Mezöhegyes.
The first Incitato who came to Fagaras in Transsylvania, Romania, was Incitato I (1875-1880). Unfortunately this line died out in Fagaras. It's too bad, as the sire for the first Incitato originaly came from here. Incitato IV was the first stallion who was brought to Babolna in Hungary (1907-1923).
Since founding Szilvasvarad in 1951, there has been an Incitato there. The breeding stallion Incitato XII, born in 1984 is a perfect representative for the line in the stud.
Lipizza and Piber do not breed this line nor use the Incitato stallions for their mares, but in Lipica Pluto Fantasca II's grandmother is 83 Incitato XXII and through her is the Incitato line also represented in the Pluto line of today.
In Topolcianky, there has also been an Incitato from Babolna for breeding from 1966 to 1970 (Incitato V x 76 Maestoso),
MARE FAMILIES
The mare families are as important as the stallion lines, like for all breeds throughout the world. In Lipizzan breed there are the classical mare families (Lipica) and the mare families from other studs, which are as important. Carefully build mare lines are necessary for the progress of the Lipizzans.
A family takes the name of it's founding dam.
There are 20 classical mare families from which only 14 has survived in Lipica. The rest had died out in Lipica.
Classical mare families:
Sardinia
The founding dam was a grey mare of Karst breed, born in 1776. The important mares in this family were: Bravissima, Betalka, Beja, Virtuosa, Materia, Mahonia and Miramar. Mares of this family in Lipica are called Betalka.
Spadiglia
The Karst breed mare Spadiglia, 1778, was the founding dam of this line. The most important mares in this line were: Mirabella, Monteaura, Montenegra, Monterosa and Mora. Mares of this family in Lipica are called Monteaura.
Argentina
The founder of this family, Argentina, a mare of Karst breed, was born in 1767. The important mares of this family were: Aquilea, Austria, Ancona and Adria. In Lipica, the mares of this family are called Slave and Adria.
Africa
Africa, a grey mare from Kladruby, was the founder of this family. She was born in 1746. The important mares of this family were Benvenuta, Basilica, Bazovica ,Brezovica, Barbana and Batosta. The mares of this family are called Barbana and Batosta.
Almerina
The founding dam was Almerina, a grey mare from Kladruby, born in 1769. Important mares of this line were Albania, Alba, Sistina, Santa, Slavonia, Slatina, Slovenia and Samira. In Lipica, this line goes further with names Slavina, Samira, Slovenia and Sistina.
Presciana
Presciana, 1782, a mare from Kladruby was the founder of this line. The most important mares of this line were Romana, Bellafiglia, Bona and Bonavia. In Lipica, the mares of this family are called Bonadea.
Englanderia
The founder of this family was the grey Englanderia, born 1773 in Kladruby. The mares of importance to this line were Andalusia, Alda, Aleppa, Allotria and Allegra. In Lipica, the mares of this family are called Allegra.
Europa
The grey Kladruby mare Europa, 1774, was the founder of this family. Important mares of this family were Musica, Traga, Trompeta and Triglava. In Lipica, the mares of this family are called Trompeta.
Stornella
This family originates from Kopcany in Czechoslovakia, where it's founder the black Stornella was born in 1748. Important mares of this line were Stornella, Stella, Steaka, Saffa, Sava and Sagana. In Lipica, the mares of this line are called Steaka.
Famosa
The founder mare was the black Famosa, 1783, from Kopcany in Czechoslovakia. Today this family doesn't exist in Lipica as it has died out there. They still exist In Piber and Monterotondot. In Lipica, the mares of this line were called Famosa or Strana.
Deflorata
The grey Deflorata, 1767, from Denmark was the founder mare of this line. The most important mares of this family were Capriola, Canissa, Cattinara, Calma and Capra. In Lipica, the mares of this line are called Capriola and Canissa.
Rosza
The founder mare Rosza was born in 1886 and came from Aladar Jankovic stud. This line has died out in Lipica, as there are no representatives of the Rosza family.
Khell il Massaid
Khell il Massaid was a brown mare, the founding mare of this line. She was an Arabian and born in 1841. This line has died out.
Mersuha
The founder mare of this line was Mersuha, an original Arabian mare, bought from the Arabian desert. This line has died out and doesn't exist in Lipica.
Gidrana
Gidrana, 1841, was the founder mare of this family. She was an Arabian.The most important mares of this family were Gaetana, Gaeta, Garafolina and Galanta. In Lipica, the mares of this line are called Gaeta and Gaetana.
Djebrin
Djebrin, 1862, the Arab mare from Radautz, was the founder mare of this family. The important mares of this family are Dubovina, Darinka and Distinta. In Lipica, the mares of this line are called Dubovina.
Mercurio
The founder mare of this family was the Arabian mare Mercurio. Born 1883 in the Austrian Military Stud Radautz. Mares of this family are called Gratia, Gratiosa, Graina, Gradita and Fantasia. In Lipica the mares of this line are called Gratiosa.
Theodorosta
The Arabian founder mare Theodorosta, 1886, came from the stud of Baron Kapri at Bukovina. The famous mares of this line were Wanda, Wera and Watra. In Lipica, the mares of this line are called Wera.
Radautzerin
This mare family originates from Radautz and was formed at the Piber stud in 1915.
Rebecca
This line was formed at Lipica after the 2nd World War from the founding Arabian dam Rebecca from the former Speiser stud.
In Lipica, the mares of this line are called Thais.
Topolcianky /Piber line:
Rava
The founder mare Rava was born 1755 in Kladrub.The most used names for this line are Ravata, Rigoletta and Risanota.
Hungarian mare families:
542 Magyar Kanca
The founder mare 542 Magyar Kanca was born 1790 in Mezöhegyes. Today you can find this mare family in Szilvasvarad, Vucijak and Bana. In Croatia and Bosnia the most used names for mares of this family are Pakra and Sava.
759 Original Moldauerin
This family was formed in 1804 in Mezöhegyes from 759 Original Moldauerin.Today this family is bred in Szilvasvarad, Bana and Simbata de Jos.
2064 Neapolitano Lepkes
This family was found already before 1790 by 134 Original Holsteinerin in Mezöhegyes. Mostly in Szilvasvarad and Bana today.
2070 Madar VI
98 Maestoso I was the founder mare of this family. She was born in 1817 in Mezöhegyes.Mares of this family are mostly called Madar. This line is used in Szilvasvarad, Piber and Bana.
2038 Neapolitano Juci
The mare 56 Siglavy Bagdady, 1905 from Babolna was the founder mare of this line.Actually an Arabian line. Today this line exists in Szilvasvarad and Bana.The mostly given names of this line are Julcsa and Juci.
502 Mozsgo Perla
This line began in 1874 in Terezovac by the founder mare Komamasszony. Szilvasvarad still breeds this line.
2052 Neapolitano Szerena
Szerena II was the founder mare of this family. You can find this line in Szilvasvarad. The mares are called Serena or Erna.
81 Maestoso Sostenuta
This family was formed in Babolna in 1897 beginning from the 101 Siglavy I. This line is still to be found in Szilvasvarad. The mares of this line are called Sostenuta or Sizilia.
Toplica/Siglavy
This line was found by Siglavy II already before 1900. Today Dakovo and Vucijak breeds this line. Mostly used names for this line are Toplica and Sutjeska.
2222 Aljas/ e. Anna
This mare family was found in Pusztazer and begon by 280 Galsar. Szilvasvarad still uses this line for breeding.
2214 Alpar/e. Angyal
Arabella from Pusztazer was the founder mare of this line. Today you can find this line in Szilvasvarad and Bana.
Pallavicini Lepke
Nusi from Pusztazer was the founding mare of this family. This line can still be found in Szilvasvarad and Bana.
2004 Alnok / e. Anczi
Hazzard from Pusztazer was the founder mare of this line. Today this line can only be found in Swedish and Danish private breeding.
501 Karst Parta
This mare family is L.I.F. recognized even though the descendance is unknown. Can be found today in Szilvasvarad and Bana.
